Pioneer Batch of Medical Students Embrace the Symbol of Their Commitment to Medicine
On February 17, 2025, the Mapúa University School of Medicine celebrated a historic moment with its first-ever Stethoscope Ceremony, marking the commitment of its pioneer batch to the medical profession. This symbolic event represents the students’ transition into clinical learning, equipping them with the essential tool that will accompany them throughout their journey as future physicians.
Held at Mapúa’s state-of-the-art Global Classroom, the ceremony emphasized the values of dedication, service, and excellence that define the institution’s vision for its medical students.

A Symbol of Responsibility and Service
The ceremony commenced with a heartfelt welcome address by Dean Malaya Santos, who highlighted the significance of this milestone and the responsibilities that come with donning the stethoscope. She spoke of the students’ role in shaping the future of healthcare and the expectations placed upon them as they embark on this noble profession.
A highlight of the event was the keynote address by Dr. Jacinto Blas Matarang III, who delivered an inspiring speech emphasizing that doctors have roles beyond being physicians. He spoke about the social accountability of medical professionals, stressing that practicing medicine is not about financial gain but about the commitment to serving communities. He urged students to see themselves not just as future doctors but as advocates, educators, and leaders who will drive meaningful change in society.

A defining moment of the event was the presentation of the stethoscopes, a universal symbol of trust, medical expertise, and patient-centered care. As each student walked up to the stage to receive their stethoscope, they took a step closer to their dreams of becoming physicians dedicated to making a difference in people’s lives.
To formalize their pledge to the profession, the students took part in the Mapúa Stethoscope Pledge, where they vowed to dedicate themselves to continuous learning and ethical medical practice. This solemn commitment reaffirmed their dedication to the core values of integrity, empathy, and lifelong learning.
Further enriching the event were symbolism talks from esteemed speakers. Ms. Kaithlyn Anne Obispo, PTRP, Vice President for Internal Affairs of AMSA – Philippines, shared insights and her experience being a third-year medical student while also juggling work outside of her academic life. With a warm and relatable approach, she spoke to the students like an older sister, offering words of encouragement as they embraced the realities of medical training. Her talk provided a sense of camaraderie, reinforcing that while the path ahead is challenging, they are never alone in their journey.
Meanwhile, Dr. John Stewart Dy, Associate Professor, discussed the stethoscope as a lifelong tool of healing and empathy, urging students to always remember the human connection at the heart of medical practice.

The ceremony concluded with closing remarks from Dean Malaya Santos, who expressed her confidence in the pioneer batch and encouraged them to rise to the challenges ahead. She reminded them that while the road to becoming a physician is demanding, it is also one of the most rewarding journeys they will ever undertake.
Shaping the Future of Healthcare
The stethoscope is more than just an instrument—it represents the responsibility, compassion, and dedication required in the medical profession.
