Mapúa Makati’s HHLIC: Transforming Medical Education with Cutting-Edge Simulation
by Julian Danielle Huvalla; Jake Bryan Cortez, MD
A New Standard in Healthcare Training
Mapúa University has reached a significant milestone with the completion of the Human Health Learning and Innovation Center (HHLIC) on the 7th floor of its Makati campus. Officially inaugurated in October 2024, this state-of-the-art facility bridges classroom learning with real-world clinical practice through advanced simulation-based education. By offering hands-on training in a controlled environment, HHLIC ensures that students develop essential medical skills with confidence and competence before transitioning to patient care.
Equipped with cutting-edge resources, including high-fidelity mannequins, task trainers, and integrated digital technologies, the HHLIC is setting a new benchmark for medical education in the Philippines.

Innovation in Action
Opening its doors during Mapúa’s centennial celebrations, the HHLIC represents the university’s dedication to transformative medical education. Since May 2024, faculty from the School of Nursing, School of Medicine, and School of Health Science have undergone specialized training to maximize the center’s potential.
Through its collaboration with Arizona State University (ASU), Mapúa has integrated a globally competitive curriculum that fuses innovation with traditional medical education. Dr. Marco Escareal, Head of Simulation, underscores this commitment:
“Many medical schools have simulation centers, but they are often underutilized. At Mapúa, we ensure every tool serves its purpose in making our graduates practice-ready, with an emphasis on patient safety and quality healthcare.”

Comprehensive Simulation for Real-World Readiness
What truly sets HHLIC apart is its student-centered approach. Unlike many institutions where simulation labs are merely supplementary, Mapúa encourages students to actively engage with the equipment during their own study hours. This hands-on learning fosters deeper understanding and confidence in clinical decision-making.
Simulation-based medical education has been a global standard for over 60 years, though its adoption in the Philippines remains relatively recent. While cadaver-based training has long been a staple in medical schools, high-fidelity mannequins like Syndaver offer a sustainable and realistic alternative. With lifelike anatomy, physiological responses, and interactive scenarios, students can practice procedures and manage emergencies without risking patient safety.
Moreover, simulation training promotes a culture of patient safety and professional accountability. By allowing learners to refine their clinical and communication skills in a risk-free setting, HHLIC ensures that Mapúa graduates enter their medical careers with both competence and confidence.
